QR COVE GUIDES

Do QR codes expire? Static vs dynamic

The code and its destination are different

A static QR code directly contains its text, URL or other information. The image has no built-in expiry timer and does not need a QR subscription to be scanned. A website linked by that code can still disappear, change permissions or stop working. A printed URL code that scans correctly but opens an error page usually has a destination problem.

How dynamic QR services differ

Many dynamic services encode a redirect address controlled by the provider. The provider can change where that address sends visitors and may offer analytics. Access may depend on its account status, subscription and continued operation. Check the provider’s terms before printing materials intended to last for years. QR Cove generates static codes and does not promise editable destinations or scan analytics.

What can change after printing?

You cannot replace the data inside an existing static image. If it points to a page on a domain you control, you can update that page while keeping its address the same. For menus or product instructions, use a durable page URL instead of a temporary file-sharing link. Renew the domain and maintain the page.

A useful maintenance check

Scan an actual printed copy after each website change. Check the complete destination, certificate, permissions and mobile layout. Keep a digital master of the QR image. If a Wi-Fi password or contact detail is encoded directly, regenerate the code when that information changes.
