How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone and Android (2026 Guide)
You don’t need a special QR scanner app anymore. Both iPhone and Android scan QR codes straight from the built-in camera. Here’s exactly how.
Scan a QR code on iPhone
- Open the Camera app.
- Point it at the QR code — hold steady for 1–2 seconds. You don’t need to tap anything.
- A yellow link box appears at the bottom (or top, on older iOS). Tap it to open the link.
If nothing happens: go to Settings → Camera → make sure Scan QR Codes is turned on. On iPhone 15 and later you can also scan from the Control Center — long-press the flashlight tile area and tap the QR icon. If your iPhone is very old (iOS 10 or earlier), you’ll need a free scanner app — but that’s rare now.
Scan a QR code on Android
- Open the Camera app and point it at the code.
- Most Android phones (Samsung, Pixel, Motorola) show a link banner automatically — tap it.
If nothing happens, try these:
- Samsung: Camera → Settings (gear icon) → turn on Scan QR codes. Or swipe down the Quick Settings panel and tap Scan QR code.
- Pixel and most others: the camera scans automatically. If not, open Google Lens (in the camera app or the Google app) and point it at the code.
- Still stuck? Make sure the camera lens is clean and you’re holding the phone 4–8 inches away in decent light.
Why a QR code won’t scan (and how to fix it)
- Too small or too far. Print QR codes at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide; hold your phone closer.
- Glare or damage. Tilt the phone to kill reflections; a torn or smeared code may need to be reprinted.
- Low contrast. QR codes need dark print on a light background. Fancy inverted colors often fail — when you make your own, keep it classic.
- Blurry photo. Tap the code on your screen to force the camera to focus on it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an app to scan QR codes in 2026?
No. iPhone and Android both scan QR codes with the built-in Camera app. Only very old phones need a separate scanner app.
Where is the QR scanner on Samsung?
Open the Camera, tap the gear icon, and enable “Scan QR codes.” There’s also a Scan QR code button in the Quick Settings panel (swipe down from the top).
Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot or photo?
Yes. On iPhone, open the photo and long-press the QR code — the link appears. On Android, open the image in Google Photos or Google Lens and it will detect the code.
Is it safe to scan random QR codes?
Mostly yes, but look before you tap. The preview shows the web address — if it looks strange or misspelled, don’t open it. Never enter passwords or payment details on a page you reached by scanning a code you don’t trust.
